# Factors, by trigger potential

* Taiwan / chip concentration (HIGH): TSMC dominates advanced AI chips; CoWoS advanced
packaging sold out through 2025-26. SK Group's "20%+ wafer deficit for AI memory
(HBM), potentially persisting to 2030" is an oral forecast a company chairman gave
reporters, not a measured shortage -- no underlying transcript or filing was located.
A counterpoint tracker reports CoWoS tightness narrowing from ~20% to ~10% by
end-2026 as capacity expands.[^telborg-datacenter-briefing] A Taiwan crisis would still reprice the AI complex
  at once.
* Oil and Hormuz (MEDIUM-HIGH): US-Iran conflict since February 2026 repeatedly
disrupted the strait (~20% of world oil, per pre-war baseline); Brent spiked above
$110-120 in spring 2026.[^nyt-iran-war-oil] Flows fell to an average of 2.7 million barrels a day in
March-May 2026 from roughly 20 million before the conflict.[^iea-hormuz-oil-supply] EIA forecasts Brent
  averaging around $85/bbl in Q3 2026;[^eia-steo-aug2026] settlement-adjacent pricing for 28 Aug 2026 (via a
financial-data aggregator, not a primary exchange feed) shows WTI near $83.40 and
Brent near $88.10. Durable $100-120+ oil during leveraged booms has historically
  helped tip markets (1973-74, 1979-80, 2007-08).
* Power grid (MEDIUM-HIGH, sectoral, and genuinely bifurcated): ERCOT's own large-load
queue was approximately 474 GW as of late July 2026 (~90% data centers), roughly
double the site's earlier 226 GW reading and still growing fast -- it was ~410 GW
just three months earlier.[^ercot-senate-jul2026] PJM's "220 GW" is not a queue at all; it is PJM's own
projected 2040 summer peak load, a 15-years-out demand forecast, and should not be
read alongside ERCOT's live request figure as if the two measured the same
thing.[^pjm-inside-lines-jan2026] The national generator-and-storage interconnection queue, a different,
  supply-side figure, is actually contracting: 2,061 GW at year-end 2025, down 10%
from 2024 after over 750 GW of unviable requests were withdrawn -- the opposite
direction from the site's earlier ">2.2 TW" framing.[^lbnl-queued-up-2025] Separately, a widely repeated
comparison of roughly 114 GW of AI data centers announced worldwide against roughly
15 GW under construction has no reproducible global methodology behind either
figure, across three independent search attempts; it is kept here only as
attributed opinion (see [the Ed Zitron record](/analysis/ed-zitron-record.md) for
whose figures these are) and the false precision of a "15.2 GW" variant elsewhere on
  this site is dropped.
* US fiscal capacity (MEDIUM, amplifier): CBO's February 2026 baseline puts the FY2026
deficit at 5.8% of GDP and net interest at 3.3% of GDP -- both inside the site's
earlier ranges. Debt held by the public is 101% of GDP in FY2026, not "near 120%":
120% is CBO's own FY2036 projection, a decade out, not a current reading, and the
two should not share one implied "now" figure.[^cbo-budget-outlook-feb2026]
* Fertilizer/food (BACKGROUND): World Bank's fertilizer price index rose over 12% in
Q1 2026 to its highest since October 2022, confirmed exactly, and is projected to
rise more than 30% in 2026.[^worldbank-fertilizer-prices] The site's "urea +49% YoY" does not match the same
document: urea climbed 80% from February to April 2026 and is projected up nearly
60% for the year -- both meaningfully higher than 49%, corrected here to the
primary figures.[^worldbank-fertilizer-prices] Stagflationary pressure, not a trigger on its own.

# Mechanism

Shock -> a leveraged structure misses ([ai-money-loop](ai-money-loop.md)) -> credit
spreads widen -> funding closes -> forced selling in the most crowded positions
([warning-indicators](warning-indicators.md)). Without leverage, the same shock is a
bad quarter.
